China March 2015

A new Qin-like success story  in the making?

Largest Market Edition

We all now how it's hard to get accurate data from the Chinese EV market, but this month we are in luck, as China Auto Web published an extensive article regarding this matter.

Sales jumped 330% regarding the same month in 2014, with the EV Share jumping to 0,38 and YTD sales already at 22.592 units, which compares pretty well to the 6,800 during the same period last year.

After January, it is the second month that China is the largest market in the world for EV's, which says something as to where plug-ins are going.

The leader is the BYD Qin, continuously improving and now nearing the 2.500 units, with 6.319 units YTD, far above the rest of the competition;

The #2 YTD is the BAIC E-Series EV, posting a tremendous result last month (1.431 units), relegating the Zotye E20 to #3.

A good result for the #4 Zotye Z100 EV (1.202 units in March), allowing it to reach #4, and a consistent performance for the Roewe 550 PHEV, on the upwards sales trend, it is now #5, up from #9 last year.

The only foreign car present here in the Tesla Model S, in #7, let's see if they can grow their sales significantly in the rest of the year.

In #8 we have the veteran the BYD e6, which has seen its sales grow despite being on sale since 2010.

The Geely-Kandi Panda EV ends the month in #10, while in #15 we have a newcomer, the locally produced BMW 530Le is joining the ranking for the first time.

By brands, BYD (34%) is solid in #1, followed in #2 by Zotye (15%) and #3 Chery, with only 11% Share.

  1. Here is the breakdown of the cars produced actually in China for March as well as YTD:
    http://chinaautoweb.com/2015/04/chinese-ev-sales-in-march-2015/

Of note is the 2,476 for the BYD Qin, the first time they have broken 2,000 a month, which it hovered around for a few months.

Hopefully it means they have put in another production line, so sales can resume their rapid rise from ~800 March 2014.

The Tang SUV sister car is also due to enter production, I am not quite sure of the date, so I am hoping they will be able to boost production by March 2016 to at least 5,000 a month for the two together.

  2. Europe is still ahead of China (about 16,5k in march and 33k this year) but as a single country market and in absolute numbers China was the leader in march and will soon be the leader in total sales this year too (right now 23,3k USA vs. 22,6k China).

It will be interesting to see if China or Europe will be the largest market for the full year of 2015.

Are you including the UK in those European figures?
Where did you get them from, did you compile them yourself?
      Thanks.

    2. UK included. It's Jose's numbers + guesstimates for Germany, Belgium, Austria and Switzerland (15k in confirmed number....problable 16,5k-17k when those countries are included).

Oh... and Europe total this year are only confirmed numbers... so rather 35-36k with the missing countries included.

    3. With some countries missing, Europe is already at 16.2k in March and over 34k YTD, as for the end of the year numbers, i think Europe, China and the USA will grow even more in the second half of the year and it will be a close fight between the three.
